A Level Music & Music Technology Tutor in Enfield

Recital preparation on guitar or bass, plus recording, composing and production in Logic Pro.

One-to-one A level Music and A level Music Technology tuition in Enfield, at your home or online: recital preparation on guitar or bass, and recording, composing and production in Logic Pro. DBS checked, Grade 8 RSL.

I can support students taking A level Music or A level Music Technology, alongside what they're doing at school or college. As an A level music tutor I help prepare recitals on guitar or bass, and I work in Logic Pro for recording, composing and production.

A level Music: the performance recital

The recital is worth 25–35% of the A level depending on the board, and lasts from 6 minutes to at least 10. Each board measures difficulty in its own way: AQA's top band asks for pieces above Grade 7 standard, Eduqas treats roughly Grade 6 as its standard level, and Pearson Edexcel uses its own difficulty levels. The quality of the performance matters as well as the difficulty, so steady preparation across the two years makes a real difference. I help choose a programme that suits the board and the student, then build it up to performance standard.

A level Music Technology (Pearson Edexcel)

The course has four parts:

  • Recording: 20%
  • Technology-based composition: 20%
  • Listening and analysing: 25%
  • Producing and analysing: 35%

I work in Logic Pro and can help with recording technique, arranging, technology-based composition, mixing and production: the practical skills behind the coursework and the producing exam.

Composition at A level

Whether it's AQA, Edexcel, OCR or Eduqas, composition is a big share of the marks. Guitar and Logic Pro give students a fast way to sketch, structure and produce ideas.

Graded exams and UCAS points

RSL and Trinity Rock & Pop graded exams carry UCAS Tariff points (pass / merit / distinction):

  • Grade 6: 8 / 10 / 12 points
  • Grade 7: 12 / 14 / 16 points
  • Grade 8: 24 / 27 / 30 points

Graded exams are a separate qualification, not the same as an A level grade. More on exam preparation.

For parents

  • I'm DBS checked, and happy to show you the original certificate.
  • You're welcome to sit in on lessons.
  • You'll get progress notes and clear practice after every lesson.
  • I'm happy to work with your child's school music teacher if that helps.

Lessons are £55 for an hour and £30 for 30 minutes (45 minutes available, please ask). Lessons are at my home studio in Enfield Town, at your home in nearby areas (£10 extra), or online. No result is ever guaranteed, but steady, focused preparation gives students the best chance of doing themselves justice.

A level music tuition: common questions

Do you tutor A level Music Technology?

Yes. I work in Logic Pro and help with recording, technology-based composition and production skills for the Pearson Edexcel A level.

Which A level boards do you support?

AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and Eduqas for A level Music, and Pearson Edexcel for A level Music Technology. I work from the student's own specification.

Can you help with A level composition?

Yes. We can develop ideas on guitar and in Logic Pro, then shape them to the board's composition brief.

What standard does the A level recital need to be?

It depends on the board. AQA's top band asks for pieces above Grade 7 standard, Eduqas treats roughly Grade 6 as its standard, and Pearson Edexcel uses its own difficulty levels. How well the pieces are performed matters too.

Do guitar grades count for UCAS points?

Yes. Grades 6 to 8 carry UCAS Tariff points; Grade 8 is worth 24 to 30 depending on the result.

Do you teach online?

Yes, as well as at my home studio in Enfield Town and at students' homes nearby.

Common questions

How quickly will I be able to play a song?

Sooner than you’d think. Many students play a recognisable song or riff in their very first lesson. Lessons are built around making music straight away, so it never feels like a chore.

Do you teach complete beginners?

Absolutely. Beginners are a big part of what I do. I teach children from age 6 and adults, from those who’ve never held a guitar to returning players picking it back up.

What ages do you teach?

All ages. Children from age 6 right through to adults of any age. Lessons are always tailored to the individual student.

Do you prepare students for exams?

Yes. I prepare students for both Trinity Rock & Pop and RSL (Rockschool) guitar exams, up to Grade 8, which is the grade I hold myself. Exams are optional and we only enter when you’re ready.

How much do lessons cost?

Lessons are £55 for an hour and £30 for 30 minutes. Lessons of 45 minutes are also available; please ask for the price. Home visits cost an additional £10 within a reasonable distance; please confirm your area before booking. I am not VAT registered, so no VAT is added. Payment is by bank transfer, and I ask for at least 24 hours' notice to cancel or rearrange a lesson.

Where do lessons take place?

At my home studio in Enfield Town, about a 10-minute walk from Enfield Town station. There is on-street parking on the road opposite; please check local signs for restrictions or charges. I also travel to students in Enfield, Winchmore Hill, Southgate, Palmers Green and nearby areas. Home visits cost an additional £10 within a reasonable distance; include your area when you enquire so we can agree the arrangements before booking. Lessons are by appointment.

What styles do you teach?

Mainly rock, blues and pop, plus the technique and music theory underneath them. Having performed in bands for over ten years, I teach these styles from real playing experience.

What’s included with lessons?

Backing tracks, progress notes, homework, chord and fretboard diagrams, and tablature. These give you what you need to make the most of your practice between lessons.

Do I need my own guitar?

Ideally yes, so you can practise at home between lessons. That’s where the real progress happens. If you’re not sure what to buy, I’m happy to advise on a suitable first guitar before you spend anything.
